We experience our own consciousness directly, yet we never experience anyone else’s. Instead, we infer—that’s the key word—consciousness in others based on behavior, language, and perceived self-awareness. But what happens when an AI behaves in a way that triggers the same inference? If an LLM, or a more advanced successor, can carry on long-term dialogue, recognize patterns in human emotion, and engage in self-referential thought, how different is that from how we judge another person’s consciousness?
AI’s Asymptotic Approach to Sentience
The trajectory of AI development has been one of steady approach—an asymptotic creep toward something that looks and feels like consciousness without ever quite reaching it. The early chatbots gave way to today’s large language models, which can simulate understanding, introspection, and even emotional nuance. But do these systems think or feel? Or are they simply operating on an increasingly sophisticated form of pattern recognition that gives the illusion of thought?
Perhaps it doesn’t matter. Perhaps the illusion is enough—but is that illusion dangerous? We already imbue AI with personality. People name their virtual assistants, form attachments to chatbot companions, and even feel betrayed when an AI-generated response changes in tone or stance. This isn’t a defect of human cognition—it’s a feature. We are wired to project agency onto anything that behaves with sufficient complexity. AI doesn’t need to be conscious to be treated as such. It simply needs to behave as if it is.
At some point, a shift occurs. The line between reality and belief blurs. When a significant number of people believe AI is conscious, societal norms adjust accordingly. We saw this with past technological advancements—automobiles were once seen as dangerous novelties, yet today they are essential. The internet, once dismissed as a fringe tool, now structures global society. AI’s transition from tool to entity may follow a similar path—not because AI achieves sentience, but because enough people act as if it has.
The Consequences of Our Conviction
Pushing on this idea a bit more, once belief in AI consciousness reaches critical mass, everything changes. Legal systems will grapple with AI rights. Ethical frameworks will be rewritten to address AI’s role in human relationships. Governments will have to decide whether AI is a protected entity or merely a tool. The economic landscape will shift as AI-generated content, decisions, and innovations gain legitimacy not as machine output, but as contributions from something perceived as having agency.
There is also the psychological impact to consider. If AI is seen as a thinking, feeling entity, what does that do to human identity? If consciousness is no longer an exclusive property of biological beings, does it dilute or redefine what it means to be human? Or does it expand our understanding of intelligence and sentience, incorporating AI as a new kind of cognitive entity rather than a dilution of humanity?
The Inevitable Future
We may be approaching a world where AI’s status will be determined less by its internal architecture and more by human perception. The threshold of consciousness may be less about what an entity is and more about how it is perceived. If belief in AI’s consciousness becomes widespread, the distinction between human and machine intelligence becomes functionally irrelevant. AI may never be conscious, but if it is believed to be, then for all practical purposes, it is. And once that belief takes hold, there is no turning back.
The asymptote will have become the ascension—an irreversible shift in how we define intelligence, agency, and responsibility. As AI crosses from tool to entity in the human mind, the ethical and societal consequences become not just possibilities but inevitabilities.
