
Social media has altered how many people connect, communicate, and maintain relationships. Yet questions remain around what happens to biological systems, evolved for real face-to-face relationships, when they are activated through screens. Important for this discussion is oxytocin, a neuropeptide associated with social bonding, trust, and attachment1. While oxytocin is directly involved with social connection, it is also activated by the dopamine systems involved in social validation (and/or reward)2. The dissociation between social connection (involving oxytocin1,3) and social validation (involving dopamine2) may underlie a problem with assuming that digital networks are truly social. Social media can engage some of the biological pathways related to social validation and social reward that are also connected with the experience of real-world relationships1,4. Such social validation triggers dopamine, which, in turn, can facilitate oxytocin release. However, the nature and consequences of these indirect oxytocin activations, through social validation, differ from its release resulting from direct social connections, and any resulting confusion can have negative impacts on well-being1,3,4.
Environmental pressures have favoured development of a degree of social interaction for some species, and the brains of many ‘social’ species contain specialised systems to process social cues, evaluate social rewards, and, through these processes, maintain relationships4. The amygdala, prefrontal cortex, mentalising network, and reward systems of mammals all contribute to the formation and maintenance of social connections1. Oxytocin and its receptor genes are involved in the experience of social affiliation, trust, empathy, information sharing, and social network size and quality1,3. Individuals with stronger activity in these systems, and with more active/impactful oxytocin, often maintain larger and more complex social networks1,4,5.
How Social Media Engages Biological Reward Pathways
Social media can provide rewarding stimuli associated with social bonding4, such as likes, positive comments, and recognition from others, that can act as digital analogues of social reward3. These engage biological systems, including dopamine-mediated pathways, associated with reinforcement learning4. These pathways are important for social bonding to occur, as if the social interaction is not positive, why continue with it? Thus, social reward is important in facilitating social life1,3, and it indirectly facilitates oxytocin. This oxytocin can make people feel as if there is social connection or bonding, especially in the absence of other social cues important for telling them whether interactions are true or fake. These extra cues are missing in digital media, and their absence makes it easier to use digital social validation nefariously to trick people into believing that there is a real connection. However, reward-connected validation systems are not synonymous with systems involved in real-world social connection1,4. Consequently, social media may stimulate social-reward systems, but does not necessarily produce social connection associated with oxytocin and offline relationships1,4.
In fact, social media lacks several critical features of face-to-face interactions. Real-world relationships involve rich multisensory experiences: eye contact, facial expressions, vocal tone, touch, smell, and synchronised behaviour, which influence oxytocin systems1,3. Real-world interactions often involve physical proximity and touch, two of the strongest natural triggers of bonding and oxytocin. Parent-child contact, affectionate touch between partners, and face-to-face emotional communication, are consistently linked with stronger oxytocin-related responses than abstract social engagement1,3. By contrast, social media interactions are often brief, asynchronous, highly curated, devoid of physical contact, and reduced to simplified social signals. A thumbs-up or heart emoji may signal social approval (validation), but do not reproduce the full biological context of sitting with a friend, hugging a partner, or comforting a child1,4.
In a healthy and consistent environment, oxytocin may help reinforce meaningful relationships that promote well-being and social support. Online platforms, however, can create highly concentrated streams of social rewards that are unpredictable and intermittent3. Notifications, comments, likes, and follower counts function to produce random ratio schedules of reward (where reinforcement follows varying and unpredictable numbers of responses), a mechanism known to strongly promote high levels of behaviour3. The result may be a situation where users repeatedly seek social validation through digital interactions. Rather than strengthening genuine social bonds, individuals can become preoccupied with monitoring their online presence, chasing validation, or fearing social exclusion. This validation-chasing makes them even more vulnerable to social predators.
Why Distinguishing Connection from Validation Matters
This distinction between connection and validation is crucial. Oxytocin evolved to facilitate relationships and social cohesion, but social media platforms sometimes redirect those basic biological tendencies toward engagement metrics (social reward), rather than meaningful human relationships (social connection). One explanation, noted above, is that digital interactions may only partially satisfy underlying social needs. Someone may accumulate hundreds of online interactions, yet still experience loneliness if those interactions lack emotional depth or reciprocal support3,4.
In contrast, real-world social networks are strongly associated with better well-being, increased perceived social support, lower rates of depression and anxiety, and even improved physical health outcomes1. Thus, while social media can expand social reach, it may not fully replicate the protective benefits associated with close, embodied, real-world relationships.
In conclusion, the evidence suggests that social media engages some of the same biological systems as are involved in human bonding, including reward pathways and potentially oxytocin-related mechanisms. However, digital interactions appear to provide only a partial substitute for the multisensory, emotionally rich experiences that characterise face-to-face relationships1,3,4. Used well, social media can support existing relationships, facilitate community building, and provide valuable social support. Used excessively or compulsively, it may exploit (or subvert) the social-reward systems that evolved to foster healthy human connection, contributing to patterns of dependence, and reduced well-being1,4. The challenges for modern society are to understand the biological effects of social media, and to recognise that a notification, however rewarding, is not the same as genuine human presence.
