With Father’s Day right around the corner, teenage daughters might find comfort in watching movies to help them navigate this day without their father. Whether the loss of their father is new, or they have been navigating their parental death journey for a few years, movies can be a comforting way to manage the day without their dads.
Many movies can help young-adult fatherless daughters process Father’s Day. In some, one of the main characters is a great father making wonderful memories with his children. Then there are other movies where daughters can relate to the fictional character on the big screen who also lost their father. These can help daughters feel less alone in their grief.
One movie that can be especially comforting is Fathers & Daughters, starring Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. (The movie has a rating of “R” so it’s recommended for ages 17 years and older.) Crowe plays Jake Davis, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and the father of young Katie. A car accident takes Katie’s mother away at a young age, so her father is all that she has left. Due to the accident, Jake struggles with his grief and his own mental health while trying to raise his daughter on his own. Extenuating circumstances cause even more struggles for Jake as the movie channels back and forth between Katie’s childhood—and the aftermath of her mother’s death—to when she is grown and in her 20s looking back at the trauma she endured. Her father left her a parting gift that turned out to be a legacy of love she didn’t grasp until many years later. Looking back, she realizes all her father did to show he truly loved her. This movie can help a daughter to remember her own loving late father in the same way Katie eventually did.
