
A Blind Spot With Real‑World Consequences
Richard Davidson, the founder and director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, warns us (Davidson & Dahl, 2026, p 5):
“The human species is experiencing a massive mental health crisis.”
Over 150 years have passed since the publication of On the Origin of Species (Darwin, 1859), and biological evolution has since become a cornerstone of modern science. We now accept that species adapt, transform, and sometimes become extinct. We use evolutionary principles to study disease, ecology, and behavior.
However, when it comes to the human mind, acceptance suddenly wavers. We hesitate to view mental life—perception, consciousness, and identity—as part of the same evolutionary continuum. This hesitation is not just intellectual curiosity. It is a public health issue of the highest order.
If the mind is an evolutionary phenomenon, then its health depends on the living processes that shape it. When a society neglects these processes, it endangers mental well-being. This is the forgotten evolution, and its consequences are visible everywhere (De Vleeschauwer, 2026).
How the Mind Became “Non‑Natural”
For centuries, Western thought has treated the human mind as separate from nature. Descartes separated thinking from matter (Descartes, 1641). Kant placed rationality in a transcendental realm (Kant, 1781). Early psychology adopted this dualistic perspective, focusing on functions, symbols, and cognition rather than biological evolution.
This created a powerful cultural assumption. Intelligence is cultural, not biological. Intelligence is symbolic, not evolutionary. Intelligence is human, not natural. However, modern science increasingly contradicts this view.
Darwin Was Visible—The Mind Is Not
Darwin’s theory convinced the world because its premises were observable: fossils, anatomical variation, ecological pressures, and natural selection. By contrast, the mind leaves no fossils. It cannot be excavated or weighed. It only emerges in interaction between organism and environment, body and brain, and person and culture. This invisibility has delayed our understanding of mental evolution. However, it has not stopped progress.
The New Science: The Mind Is Evolutionary
A new consensus is emerging across biology, neuroscience, and cognitive science: Intelligence is not a human exception, but rather a life function. Cells sense and respond to information (Miller, 2020; Levin, 2021). Plants demonstrate perception, memory, and problem-solving abilities (Mancuso & Viola, 2015; Calvo & Friston, 2017). The brain is a predictive organ that continuously adjusts to its environment (Friston, 2010). Evolution is driven by cooperation and information exchange (Margulis, 1998).
In this light, the human mind becomes easier to understand. It is a late evolutionary refinement of the same living intelligence that shaped all organisms. The mind is not separate from nature. It is nature evolved.
The Human Mind as an Evolutionary Organ
Viewing the mind through an evolutionary lens provides four key insights.
1. Perception is biological attunement. Our senses act as active filters, shaped by millions of years of adaptation (LeDoux, 2019, 2023).
2. Consciousness is relational. It emerges from the interplay between the body, brain, environment, and culture (Damasio, 2026).
3. Identity is dynamic. The self is an evolving pattern of interactions (Thompson, 2007).
4. Thinking is a recent development.
Symbolic reasoning is an extension of older forms of sensing and resonating (Reber, 2019). In other words: The mind is not an exception to evolution; rather, it is one of evolution’s most complex outcomes.
The Crucial Insight: Mental Health Has an Evolutionary Origin
This is where the societal relevance becomes clear. If the mind is evolutionary, then mental health depends on conditions that foster evolutionary intelligence, such as sensory richness, ecological connection, relational warmth, embodied presence, and a sense of meaning rooted in lived experience.
These are not luxuries. They are biological necessities. Modern society is eroding them. We live indoors, on screens, and in abstraction. We move less, sense less, and relate less. We overload our cognition and starve our perception. This is not a neutral shift. It is an evolutionary mismatch—a gap between what our minds evolved to need and what our culture provides.
Intelligence Essential Reads
The result is evident in the rising rates of anxiety, depression, burnout, loneliness, fragmented attention, and identity instability. These are not just psychological disorders. Rather, they are symptoms of disconnection from the processes that sustain mental health. This is why the title matters. On the Origin of the Healthy Mind is not a metaphor. It is a literal description of where mental health comes from—and what we are losing.
The Human Paradox: Highest Intelligence, Highest Vulnerability
Symbolic intelligence endows humans with extraordinary abilities, such as imagination, planning, creativity, and cooperation. However, it also enables us to detach from the ecological and relational realities that shaped us. When abstraction is divorced from embodiment, nature, and community, it becomes dangerous. This evolutionary tension lies at the heart of modern mental health.
Restoring Attunement: A Public Health Priority
If the mind is an evolutionary organ, then mental health requires attunement—reconnection with the living systems that shaped us.
1. Ecological attunement: nature contact, rhythm, sensory grounding, and movement.
2. Relational attunement: healthy attachment, empathy, co-regulation, and shared meaning.
3. Cognitive attunement: model awareness, emotional sensitivity, and metacognition.
These are not therapeutic techniques. They are evolutionary conditions. Neglecting them is not just unhealthy—it is unsustainable.
Conclusion: The Forgotten Evolution and the Future of Mental Health
The evolution of the human mind is not a speculative idea. Rather, it is a necessary extension of Darwin’s insight. As living organisms, we developed a new form of attunement: symbolic intelligence. Because of this, we stand at a cultural and ecological crossroads.
Understanding the mind in evolutionary terms does not diminish humanity. Rather, it situates us within the living world and reminds us that mental health is biological and ecological as well as psychological.
The missing evolution is not biological. It is psychological. Recognizing this may be one of the most important steps we can take toward a healthier, more connected future.
